Mediation: quick and easy way to beat conflict and make workplace relationships work

Workplace conflict occurs “between workers whose jobs are interdependent and who feel angry; who perceive the other(s) as being at fault and who act in a ways that cause a business problem.” 1

Workplace conflict costs time and money. But mediation can cut through conflict quickly – and without recourse to senior management.

Mediation gives each person or group involved in a voice. It results in an honour-bound agreement, rather than being legally binding. The mediation process is impartial and voluntary, and, of course, confidential. It is a safe way of keeping the possibility of working together in the future open. It results in people and groups now listening to one another – perhaps for the first time. This is in contrast to the typical fortress building approach that often develops with conflict.

Such a protective stance is understandable. We often find both sides are distressed – and stressed – by the ongoing conflict.

The mediation process often proves an eye-opening experience. People gain real insight. When real listening happens – perhaps for the first time –common interests are revealed. What often surprising people is the realisation that they have more interests in common than they have differences. So now the focus can move towards creating a workable solution together. Those involved can create, own and implement a solution that is acceptable to everyone.

Mediation’s big benefits:

  • It creates a win-win solution, allowing relationships to work in the future
  • It’s quick
  • It saves time and reduces costs
  • It reduces stress
  • It is informal
